The Darkness on the Edge of Town Tour Interview Festival (or TDOTEOTTIF for short...) ends this week with two television clips that feature bits of interview material along with concert footage from two of Bruce Springsteen's stops on that tour as summer turned to autumn in 1978.
As we all wait for the release of the Darkness box set, speculation continues to build regarding the expected concert DVD. Bruce and the E Street Band were on fire on this tour and the oft bootlegged material that came out of their three night stand at the Capitol Theatre stands right up there with the best of the performances off that tour. I'd love to see a full length real time concert off this tour, which would require two DVDs. A potential release date is June 2, 2010, 32 years to the date after the release of the 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' album. That's just two months away....
Our first clip comes from Henry Tenenbaum's 'The 9 Muses'. It features video clips from Bruce's August 15, 1978 concert in Largo, Maryland. This concert is another great candidate for the DVD.
Channel 4 News in New York City appears to have run at least two pieces on Bruce's shows in Passaic September 19th to 21st. I like Bruce's little story that leads off this clip.
'Badlands' got plenty of air time in that clip, while we just got a little sample of 'Spirit In The Night' so I thought I'd let you have a look at the whole song. In the interview, Bruce spoke of how friendly his fans are when he goes into the audience mid-song. In this example, he doesn't make it very far into the crowd before getting swarmed. It's not the same performance as the one featured on Channel 4, so footage exists from at least two nights in Passaic. Notice all the gifts being passed or tossed to Bruce, including a bottle of Jack Daniels. It was just a few days before Bruce's 29th birthday.
Happy Friday!
